Sand & Thorn was not planned. It grew out of necessity, the way most things do in the lower city: Yucca had the knowledge, people kept asking, and at some point it became easier to set up a counter than to keep having the same conversation in the street. The formulations she sells now are the same ones she has been making for years, first for herself, then for the people around her, then for anyone who could pay and knew enough to ask the right questions.

She is not a trained alchemist in any formal sense. She did not study at any academy. What she has instead is roughly fifteen years of learning which plants in Thanalan heal things and which ones kill them, developed in circumstances that did not leave much room for error. The quality of the work reflects that. The paperwork is considerably thinner than a licensed shop would produce, and the prices are accordingly honest.

The shop is one side of what she does. The other side is fieldwork: contracts, extractions, operations that take her and her partner Levthgar Yorvasch across most of the known world. When the shop is closed, they are usually somewhere that is not Ul'dah. When the shop is open, she is usually in the back, and knocking is appreciated.

She grew up in the city orphanage, got thrown out at adulthood with nothing, and built what she needed from what the streets offered. This is relevant context for both the shop and the other business. It explains the prices she charges, the clients she refuses, and why the orphanage children two streets over get their medicine for free.

There is a third thing, though she will not confirm it if asked directly. The lower city knows: the operation that used to bleed vendors and run trafficking through the desert routes changed hands, and whoever runs it now has different rules. No extortion of those who cannot afford it. No innocents. The violence, when it comes, points up. The sand coins that have been appearing in Brass Blades reports across the city carry a hare on one face. Make of that what you will.
